Building Self-Esteem
Rediscovering your worth and learning to be kind to yourself.
What is Self-Esteem?
Self-esteem is how we value and perceive ourselves. It's based on our opinions and beliefs about ourselves, which can sometimes feel difficult to change. It is not about arrogance or vanity; it's about having a quiet, respectful appreciation for your own worth as a person.
Experiences like domestic abuse can severely damage self-esteem. An abuser often deliberately erodes your confidence and sense of self-worth as a method of control. Rebuilding it is a crucial part of healing.
Gentle Steps to Rebuild Self-Esteem
This is a slow process. Be patient and start with small, kind actions.
Challenge Your Inner Critic
The abuser's voice can often become your own inner voice. When you hear critical thoughts, try to notice them without judgement. Ask yourself: "Is this really true? Or is this something they taught me to believe?"
Our AI Note to Self tool can help generate positive affirmations to counter these thoughts.
Celebrate Small Wins
Acknowledge your daily accomplishments, no matter how small. Did you get out of bed? Make a cup of tea? Respond to an email? These are all victories worth recognising.

Practice Self-Care
Doing things that care for your mind and body reinforces the message that you are worthy of care. This isn't about grand gestures. It can be listening to music, having a warm bath, or simply taking five minutes to breathe.
