Sexual Assault Referral Centres (SARCs)

Confidential help, treatment, and support after sexual assault.

What are SARCs?

Sexual assault referral centres (SARCs) are specialist medical and forensic services for anyone who has been raped or sexually assaulted. They are designed to be safe, comfortable, and supportive environments, separate from the police.

They have specially trained doctors, nurses, and support workers who can provide medical care, emotional support, and practical help.

Services Offered by SARCs

You can access SARC services without having to report the assault to the police.

  • Medical Care: Immediate medical treatment, including emergency contraception, pregnancy testing, and screening for sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
  • Forensic Examination: If you are considering reporting to the police, a forensic medical examination can be carried out to collect evidence. This can often be stored for a period of time while you decide what to do next.
  • Emotional and Psychological Support: Access to crisis workers and referrals to specialist counselling and support services.
  • Practical Help: Advice on housing, benefits, and other practical issues. They can also provide you with information about your legal options.

How to Find Your Nearest SARC

There is a network of SARCs across the UK. The NHS website provides a comprehensive tool to find the one closest to you.

It's Your Choice

Remember, attending a SARC does not commit you to reporting the incident to the police. It is a place to get confidential support and care while you consider your options. Your choices will be respected.
